The Gladiator's Soul chapter 7

Previous chapter: The Gladiator's Soul chapter 6

After  the call she put on an apron which, like almost everything, looked comically big on her. “La la la…” Hime sang funnily as she cooked.  I will never forget her way of treating the ingredients.

She peeled three potatoes that ended with one third of their original size, practically cubic, before washing and putting them on a plate. Following ‘the chef’ cut some vegetables into pieces with a knife and next some meat. She grabbed spice flasks without discriminating any of them and various ingredients she found around there.

Hime took a whole crab, some prawns, mushrooms… and put all of it to cook in a pot. After a while the mixture started to boil, and the smell that thing emanated was a little strange. She kept on cooking it until all the water in the pot was evaporated! Then poured it out into a platter and let it cool down.

The girl religiously washed the plates, utensils and pans used in the battle, before taking the result onto the table in front of the dinner guest.
“Voila! Crab and prawn pie!”
I pulled a face of a pretentious taster and smelled it, making an expression like ‘well, the smell is not that bad’ and tried it. I took a little with a spoon, blew on it not to burn myself and put it into my mouth. The taste was something difficult to describe, as well as the texture. It made some lump in my throat and I swallowed as best as I could. Before me a Hime with sparkling eyes awaited my verdict. That maybe was not even food... Even so I ate all of it (crab included).
“Thanks for the meal. It had a very original taste.”

And there was again her insurance seller grin: “Not at all, sir. Come back to this restaurant whenever you want.”

During the following days Hime did all kinds of chores, showing her characteristic flair and clumsiness. With her tiny body she took the lawnmower as if she wanted to hang from it; and with the net for cleaning the pool she seemed an ant dragging an enormous branch.
All that together with her cute face looked like and authentic graphical joke. I held my laugh the best I could, not to discourage her, and sometimes I covered my mouth as if I were coughing. Hime, who was not stupid, looked at me crinkling her nose, then turned back her head with a ‘mph!’ and resumed her work as thought nothing had happened.

Those weeks were really fun. Who would want to go to some amusement park, when you can see this every single day.

It was almost September already, and the date for enrolling was getting closer. Hime had not stopped working, but had never asked anything in return. This was the perfect scenario, here she could not refuse. After making some calls, everything was set. The girl had more than a good enough level to enter the special course, and now she would have the money as well. I had already taken into account the drawback of no longer being in the same class, but that would be the best for her. The grief her face was wearing in a moment of distraction, on the day she was healing my wounds, would not fade away so easily from my memories.

She had become my only reason for existing. And even beyond that was her smile; her happiness. I would never allow anybody else to harm her. But I was scared. Somebody could be planning to retaliate against us. In order not to involve her and spoil her bright future, I had to become strong and look after her. That’s it; strong enough to protect her from the shadows. I would become the shade of her sun, anonymous guardian of that radiant brilliance. The plan was perfect. Given that my parents were so rich, there would not be any further concern. She could keep on studying, and I would remain happy by her side.

“Hime!”
“What’s the matter?” She appeared with her gardener outfit.
“Pfff!”
“Eh, don’t laugh!”
Now finally everything was on my favour. “Your Name Day will be in no time, right?”

“That’s right.”
“Well I have a surprise for you, but we have to go to a certain place to collect it. So primp yourself for the occasion, ok?”
“A surprise? Alright! But what is it? A game? A T-shirt?”
I smiled with a malice like the very devil’s: “I won’t tell you…”
“Uguu, at least give me a hint!”
“Alright; but only one: It’s none of the things you have said.”

I walked her until halfway to her house, as usual. Her face and gestures of nervousness were something so good to see. It was obvious she could not wait for the surprise. I only expected that at least she could sleep.
“Then tomorrow I will pick you up at home about ten in the morning or so.” We said goodbye.

The next day dawned bright and clear. I got dressed, had breakfast and went to collect my Hime. That was thrilling, the truth is, I was dying to see her face when she found out what the surprise was. Although a small fear that she did not want to accept it dwelled in my heart, I had more than enough arguments to convince her. As the door of my house closed behind me my eyes were blinded by the sun.

I went prancing out of excitement, so Hime’s house came into view really soon. It was still half past nine, so I went to the river near her house to skim some stones. When it was almost the due time I came back to the house and knocked the door.
Some noisy footsteps were heard: “No, wait, I will open!”
<<Hime is really frantic, this is going to be so good.>> Before that thought could fade from my mind the door opened like a trap, absorbing the air in my surroundings.

In spite of being so poor she was wearing a lovely dress, and two ponytails with some hair ribbons that looked gorgeous on her. The truth is, I stayed dumbfounded watching her.
“Kota! What’s the matter? How do I look in my dress? Do you think it will be at the height of the occasion?”
“Wow! I assure you. Now you are really ‘hime’…”

Himawari blushed slightly and patted my shoulder: “Come on, don’t make too much of it!”

“Then, a promise is a promise. We have to go to a place”
“Yes! At last my surprise!” The girl hopped like a spring. We got to walk down the street, turning left from her door. Our destination was not far from there, but I intently leaded her through a roundabout route in order to disorientate her a little. We went out of an alley, in front of a rise building.

The Gladiator's Soul chapter 6

“Magistrateeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!” There was Hime with her yukata.
“Could you please take this edge?” she said, handing me one end of the obi. And I grabbed it with resignation. <<What is wrong? Let’s have a laugh with ‘the Hime top’, haha.>> “All right! You asked for it! Get ready!”
“Go ahead!”
I pulled hard from it as I said “This is fabulous!” and she shouted “No, please!”
Finally the obi  unrolled completely and the dizzy Hime crashed into the wall. She fell to the floor like a dry log. Without a second thought I took the carpet and rolled it around her.

When her dizziness was over:
“Help! The evil magistrate caught me! Somebody help me!” With which the situation could not be better for me. I brought a plate of ratatouille and started to eat it slow and suggestively in front of her. Hime’s hungry face was so obvious that I could hardly keep a straight face.

“What’s the matter, do you want to eat, my hostage princess?”
“Don’t be so meanie! You went too far with the game!”
“Ah, no, no, no. If you are rude to me I won’t give you any of this hot ratatouille.” Hime only swelled her cheeks like a frog as a sign of annoyance  and resignation.

I approached her with the plate of ratatouille and the spoon. “One for mom… Come on, swallow. Other one for dad…” It overflowed from the sides of her mouth and I cleaned it with the spoon and a cloth. “My child eats so well…!”

Although she kept a face of annoyance, somehow it had become sweeter. “Very well, my child! You ate all of it! Now I will set you free…”
Her face blushed all of a sudden.
“But… is there not a main dish?”
“That’s fine, my child is a little greedy. Here you are. Chicken breast.”
I kept on feeding her. The scene was really tender. After she finished I finally released her.
“Very well, my child is the best!” I said as I gave a strong hug to her ‘released’ and humid body… <<humid…?>> Big tears like storm drops ran along her rosy cheeks.
“Whatever you do… never leave me…” she whispered.
“That is the plan of this kidnapping, my hostage” I replied.

At last the awaited summer holiday came. My parents, as usual, were lost abroad in their business trips. Hime and I went to my mansion to have a bath.
It was going to be Hime’s Name Day. I did not want to wait until her birthday, since I would like to set her free from her concerns as soon as possible. But I knew something was wrong there. I invited her many days to my pool, and I knew she felt bad because of it; although she did not say it to me in order not to worry me.

If on top of that, I were to pay for the enrolment into the accelerated course, I could even spoil our relationship.
So I had to force her to make me a big favour. Some inmense favour so that she could pay me back, so that she did not feel bad. But which one?
It had to be something that even her, being so poor, could do… Maybe some job like cooking or yard work, cleaning the pool… that’s right. I should have her work for me.

We were lying side to side in two hammocks basking in the sun.
“… Hey, Hime”
“mmmmm?”
“Some maids are on holiday, and I need some help with the house chores like cooking, ironing, cleaning the pool, yard work… would you like to give me a hand?”
“Yes, of course! After all you do for me, that would be the least I should do.”
So she started making dinner that night.
“Yes mom, I am cooking for Kota so I will have dinner here.”

The Gladiator's Soul chapter 5

Previous chapter: The Gladiator's Soul chapter 4

That night I fell on my bed exhausted. The fight and so much laughter made me feel really tired. I felt well, it could be said I was happy. Over the years I have been able to realize that day might have been the happiest in my life. But I also felt a proportional fear. Nobody could assure those bullies (or anyone other) would not come back for her; maybe for revenge, or for the sheer vice of bullying. And I recalled her sad face when bending down. She thought I could not see her from my position and loosened up.

From then on I made a critical decision: I should not depend on my Hime anymore. She was brave, far more valiant than me. But all too valuable to be lost. If I wanted to be strong enough to protect her I should change my role. I could no longer be a spoiled child; I should become her support and protector. So that every day I could see that smile on her face. It stood clear to me: I did not do it for her; I did it for myself.
I remained as coward as at the beginning, but needed that smile as the plants do the sun.
A week went by and it looked like the situation had calmed. Nobody was waiting for us at the school entrance, we were just rejected as usual.

There were just a few days left until the summer holiday. Probably that was one of the reasons. But in spite of the goodness of the favourable situation Hime did not have a good expression. She had been half day sighing with her hand on her folder. I had to find out what was making her so uncomfortable. Could it be perhaps a love letter from some admirer? It could be that; some boy would invite her to be spend some days together in holidays. Following he would say something like ‘look how that plane flies’ and she being so distracted would look there innocently. Then when she turned back her face he… <<aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrgghhhhhhhhh, I  can’t stand it! I have to discover what is the source of her concern!>>

“What happens, are you going to miss the school? Is that why you have that sad face? If it’s that don’t worry, I can be your private tutor. I will teach you to cook bugs and…”
“Puajjj! How can you be so dirty!” Somehow her face recovered its light for that ephemeral instant. I had to work out a chance to take a look at the horror folder. But how? She had not told me anything, so obviously she did not want me to find out.
<<It could really be an admirer…>> That fact was irritating me even more.
At last I found the solution. “Hime, would you like a bubble bath at my home? As thanks for healing me last time.”
“Ok, great! And I will be able to wear a yukata1 and do the magistrate’s play2?”
“It’s ok, only for today.”  Apparently the proposal worked better than expected and now her  expression was clear of concerns. Her smile and rosy cheeks were something beautiful.
We kept on talking in the way to my house.
I left her with a maid to help Hime with the clothes. Her resignation face was a picture of unspoken words; it seems she already knew the weird things Hime liked doing when she came to my house.

They went to the yacuzzi, meanwhile I did not waste a second. I quickly searched the folder, and there it was. A letter of lov…?? Of acceptance for an special accelerated course of the school! I knew Hime was good at studying, but this… Then I carried on reading… price 200 euro a month. How could it be so expensive? Was her family going to be able to pay  it, even half of it…? <<Ah, of course, this is what made her worry so much. I should do something about it.>>
I took in advantage the fact that it was going to be her Name Day soon.
<<This is my chance,  I can give her a good surprise>>.
At the moment  I just put everything away in the folder and left it as it was at the beginning. It was not a bad moment, I could make the call now.

I picked the phone up and dialled my father’s number.
“………… ……………………….. …………………” “Hello?”
“Hello dad”
“Son? Look mom, it’s our son! How strange he remembers to call us!”
“I have to ask you a favour…”
“Ah, of course that was to be expected… Anyway, tell me.”
“So… time ago I met this good friend and… well, she is my best friend.”
“Aha. Your girlfriend, isn’t she?”
“She is not my girlfriend, but more than that” I said surprising myself and blushing.
“It turns out she has been selected for the accelerated programme of the school, but her family is extremely poor and doesn’t have economic access to it…”
“So you want us to pay for it, given that we are well off…”

“Yes I do. You can ask me any favour in exchange.”
“So you are that determined… well then, we will take the maids from you and you will only have the butler from now on. Do you consider the payment fair?”
“It’s alright, I guess I can adapt.”
“Take into account he won’t be able to do everything and you will have to help with cleaning and house chores. Besides, you will have to maintain your room groomed on your own.”
Such a change seemed tough for a rich boy like me, but I was already determined to do it. “I know, I will adapt to it. Don’t worry about me.”
“… You really love that girl, right?”
“Indeed, she is the most important thing for me, the only I really care about.”
Such sentence should sound harsh for any parent, but far from showing unease he said: “I don’t know what kind of strange power that girl has, but I think she is doing you good.”
“Yes, that’s how she is. She is concerned about me and looks after me more than anyone else.”
“Dad…”
“Yes?”
“…Thank you.”
There was a brief hush on the other end of the line. My father was touched that the boy that had never had interest in anything could say those words. Finally we bade farewell.

“Magistrateeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!” There was Hime with her yukata.

========================================

Notes:

1. Yukata: Traditional Japanese garment, like a kimono, more or less. It includes a sort of girdle called ‘obi’ which is rolled around the yukata tightening it on the woman’s body.

2. Magistrate’s play: Japanese comical tradition occasionally shown in anime; an old man called ‘magistrate’ pulls the girdle or ‘obi’ of a young lady’s yukata, pretending to be harassing her or something alike. She spins like top as the obi unrolls, while she says something like “no please, no please!” and the magistrate usually looks happy as he says something like “It is wonderful, it is wonderful!”
